THE ARTIST

S.A Noory, who does wonders with paints and brush, his emergence on the art canvas in 1998 gave recognition to the magic that he paints in his miniature pieces. The details that he focuses on in his paintings speak for the love that he has for his work. His play with the colors, shadows, lines and presentation of expression tell a story of their own. It is hard to express in words the details that he focuses on in his pieces; be it the embroidery on clothes of the figures or mosaic presentation on the structures that he paints. His works require for an art lover to stand, observe and absorb the fine work that he presents. Only a personal experience with his miniature pieces can explain the feelings that these invigorate.
S.A. Noory is unique in many ways. Although Noory was trained in Fine Arts, he worked diligently to master the art of miniature painting. Over the years he has developed his own oeuvre, which encompasses a wide range of subjects rendered in the miniature tradition. He has successfully captured the delicacy of line, aesthetics of color combinations with transparency and play of light and shadow, wash effects, silky smoothness of curves, portraying facial expressions and aura of a situation.

Even a cursory glance at Noory’s works will give away the fact that he holds the paintbrush (or pencil) like a surgeon grips the scalpel. His brushstrokes are velvety smooth and remarkably controlled- the hallmark of a seasoned painter.

S.A. Noory’s work is about the synthesis of his personal feelings and emotions, His work revolves around two major themes. Rajasthani culture and Sufism. His work on Rajasthani culture explores the relationship between human and sand. He likes to paint their different clothing and colorful turbans juxtaposed with the silence of sand and traveling on camels on long journeys. Noory has tried to describe the symbolic meaning of patience and tolerance through his works which is integral to the hardships of the desert.
His work also delves on Sufism as he paints to show the message of Sufi saints relating to love and peace. Several paintings of his carry a strong illustration of Sufi narratives. By showing pigeons flying near mosque or shrines and a Sufi lost in love of the Almighty, the artist culminates the same message of divine power and supremacy through his work. By implementing a careful stroke and weaving the delicate interplay of light and shadow into the artistic vignettes, he tries to seek the way to show what inspires him.
The other gripping element of Noory’s work is the portrayal of shrines and mosques with intricate detail. His gestural brushstroke fills the swirling forms in shades of blue
